The OSGeo4W installer is recommended for regular users or organization deployments. It allows to have several QGIS versions in one place, and to keep each component up-to-date individually without having to download the whole package. Since QGIS 3.20 we only ship 64-bit Windows executables.

QGIS is unique among the major desktop GIS software applications in that it can run on Windows, Mac, and Linux computers. For this reason, it is important to select the QGIS version appropriate for your operating system on the Download page. You will also notice that, even once you have selected your operating system you may still see up to 4 options to choose from: for Windows you can select a 32 bit or 64 bit version of QGIS and for both Windows and Mac you can select the latest release of the software or an older, more stable long-term support release. The 64bit version is recommended for almost all users, unless you are attempting to install the software on a extremely old computer that has a 32 bit processor. It is also recommended that you install the latest release rather than the long term release so that you have access to the latest QGIS features. If you are working on a Windows PC or Mac, click on the QGIS standalone installer link for the software version that is most appropriate for your computer configuration to download the QGIS installation files. If you hoping to load QGIS on a Linux computer, follow the instructions on the Download page to download and install the software on you computer using the software installation method specific to your Linux distribution.
While downloading your free and open source copy of GRASS GIS, if you or your institution enjoy the software please consider making a donation to support the project. May the FOSS be with you!
If you need to build QGIS from source, please refer to the installationinstructions. They are distributed with the QGIS source code in a filecalled INSTALL. You can also find them online at ://raw.github.com/qgis/QGIS/master/doc/INSTALL.html
QGIS allows you to define a --configpath option that overrides the default path for user configuration (e.g., /.qgis2 under Linux) and forcesQSettings to use this directory, too. This allows you to, for instance, carry aQGIS installation on a flash drive together with all plugins and settings. See section System Menu for additional information.
The Windows installer has an option to download the QGIS sample dataset. If checked, the data will be downloaded to your My Documents folder andplaced in a folder called GIS Database. You may use Windows Explorer tomove this folder to any convenient location. If you did not select the checkboxto install the sample dataset during the initial QGIS installation, you may do one of the following:
For GNU/Linux and Mac OS X, there are not yet dataset installationpackages available as rpm, deb or dmg. To use the sample dataset, download thefile qgis_sample_data as a ZIP archive from and unzip the archiveon your system.
Now that you have QGIS installed and a sample dataset available, we wouldlike to demonstrate a short and simple QGIS sample session. We will visualizea raster and a vector layer. We will use the landcover raster layer,qgis_sample_data/raster/landcover.img, and the lakes vectorlayer, qgis_sample_data/gml/lakes.gml.
This option is similar to the one above, but furthermore overrides the defaultpath for user configuration (/.qgis2) and forces QSettings to usethis directory, too. This allows users to, for instance, carry a QGIS installation on aflash drive together with all plugins and settings.

Go to -osx/ and download the Python 3.6 macOS 64 bit installer (currently 3.6.7). This is a pkg installer you can run like many other software. If you don't want to replace the Python 3.7 you installed from brew, ensure this Python distribution is NOT added to the system $PATH. By default, it will install under /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/3.6.
QGIS (or Quantum GIS) is an open source geographic information system, meaning that it can be downloaded and installed on your desktop free of charge. It runs on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. If you have used ArcGIS before, which all UC Davis affiliates have free access to, QGIS is very similar except that it has less functionality but is free for everyone and can be used on a Mac without having to rely on a virtualization software program like Parallels. QGIS is not like R in that its data processing and analysis capabilities are more limited. But, QGIS is, in my opinion, a better program for making a map. It is quicker to make a map in QGIS compared to R, allows more user efficiency and control over mapping aesthetics, and produces nice looking maps with relatively little cost in time, effort and learning curve. This is not to say that you should not use R for mapping. If you master spatial R, you can make some really cool maps with R. But, if you need to quickly make a nice looking map, QGIS is a great tool to have in your back pocket. 2ff7e9595c
