You don't need a Kindle device to read Amazon books. The Kindle app supports a host of different devices(Opens in a new window), including Windows and Mac computers, as well as iOS, iPadOS, and Android mobile devices. It can handle books from Amazon as well as anything from your library via Libby(Opens in a new window).

Aimed at both ebooks and audiobooks, the Kobo Books app(Opens in a new window) is available for Windows, macOS, iOS/iPadOS, and Android. It lets you read books downloaded from the Kobo store(Opens in a new window) as well as imported books saved as PDFs or EPUBs.

FBReader(Opens in a new window) lets you read books downloaded from its own network library or those that you manually import from other sources. The app supports a variety of formats, including PDF, ePub, mobi, RTF, HTML, and plain text. Versions of the app are available for iOS, iPadOS, Android, Windows, and Linux.

Android-only FullReader(Opens in a new window) allows you to pull in a variety of different ebooks from your device or from the cloud. The app supports many different formats, including ePUB, PDF, mobi, txt, doc, docx, and HTML. You can scan for books stored on your device and then import the ones you want to read. For books stored in the cloud, you connect to Google Drive, Dropbox, or Microsoft OneDrive, and download them to your device.

There are some childrens books in iBooks that will read along with you or read to you but it needs to be supported in the book. Ther is an app that can download free audiobooks of books that are in public domain. It is called simply audiobooks and there is a free version on the app store. I believe there kindle had the ability to read any book to you but authors threw fits over that since they sell audiobooks for more than you pay for the book.

Yes, voiceover will read any text on the screen, but you can't set it to read an entire book. You would need to manually turn pages. This is not something you are going to use to listen to audio books in the car, for example. I haven't messed too much with voice over, however it seems to be rather annoying to control the iPad while it is turned on. Setting it to turn on and off with three taps of the home button makes navigation better, but I don't see this as a good audio book alternative.

Go to app store and search Audiobooks for the good alternative I suggested. I also pointed out that iBooks supported this but that there wasn't much of a selection. Try reading a book with VoiceOver.

I realize I am a little late as this is an old post, but YES... and it will turn the page for you as well! I just realized it could be done and did it today. We own several kindle models, an iPad mini, an iPad 2 and an iPad Air. I like each for various reasons and our kids have preferences for various reasons, too but my favorite feature for kindles was allowing the book to read to me as I like having my hands free at times to do other things. Siri does a pretty good job. I have heard people say Siri reading is monotone but it isn't really anymore monotone than with my Kindle Gen 2 when it read or when my Kindle Fire HD reads. In fact, some words my Kindle Fire HD can't seem to pronounce correctly. LOL.

The most interesting feature for this app is its highly customizable reading interface. Enables reading for ePub, PDF, and Adobe DRM encrypted files, and lets you shop for new reads within the app, including many free classics. If you opt to pay for the Premium version, you can add as many audiobooks as you wish, as well as highlight and leave notes as you read.Android

If you want access to a huge database of ebooks for a monthly subscription fee, this is the service for you. They have over a million ebooks, hundreds of thousands of audiobooks, and over a million magazines and news articles to read. Android, iOS, Desktop

There are thousands of ebooks and audiobooks, hand-selected by your library, available for reading. Explore the collection through catalog guides, subjects, featured titles, and curated lists. It's a delight to discover new books through Libby.

"I feel like I just re-found my love for the library again. This app helps re-connect with these amazing and free resources back inot reading books but also magazines. I know the library is free but I didn't know what an array they have for electronic resources. It is great and helpful."

"I am dyslexic and old enough that is was never diagnosed in school. This is such a simple way for me to enjoy books I would never be able to read.I have been listening to the CDs for a long time. But having it on my phone allows me to listen whenever and wherever. Also this is one of the more efficient apps I have come across. Thank you Libby."

Literary trend setters can gain access to titles before they publish with Amazon First Reads, a Prime member reading benefit that offers early access to a selection of new books one month before they officially publish. And for those who are constantly searching for their next great read, Prime Reading offers a rotating selection of thousands of books, magazines, comics, short reads, audiobooks, and other material at no additional cost to a Prime membership.

We've already shown you how to buy Kindle e-books on your iPhone or iPad, but did you know that there's a whole library of free e-books available for anyone who knows how to find them? There are literally thousands of books to read, in e-book form, and audiobooks as well, if you know where to download them. Come along, bookworm, and we'll reveal the reading apps that offer more free books to read than you can get through in a lifetime.

These are actually three separate apps, but they're all public-library based. Your local library system, unless you live in an extremely rural area, will support one of these apps and offer thousands of free e-books, audiobooks, and even streaming video content to library cardholders. All you need to do is peruse your library website or visit the library to find out which e-book app your library system uses. Make sure your library card is up to date, download the app, then borrow, read, and return e-books, straight from your iPhone or iPad!

If you're working your way through the classics, this app is for you! Over 500,000 e-book titles are on offer, and over 100,000 of those are absolutely free. The variety of classic texts and novels to choose from is truly astonishing; Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Arthur Conan Doyle, and many, many more. Readers can switch between day and night mode, change the font, font size, background color, and brightness to cut down on eye strain. The downside is that the interface is a bit primitive. However, if you're headed somewhere with spotty internet access, this app can download up to 100 books to keep you busy on your adventure.

This app was the most recommended by members of our Facebook group, and after checking it out, I'm a fan as well. Once you sign up for your free account, there's a brief survey to find which categories of e-book suit you best. I chose Historical Mysteries, Historical Fiction, Literary Fiction, Biographies and Memoirs, History, Science, and Humor. There are many more categories to choose from! If you want, BookBub will send you Notifications about reduced-price and free e-books from your selected categories. Even if you don't find free e-books that you'd like to read, the recommendations from your categories can help you find new titles to borrow from other free book apps, like Libby or Overdrive.

As with many of the apps featured in this roundup, Kobo Books offers both paid and free audio and e-books. The interface is beautifully designed, functional, and smooth. There are over a thousand free e-books to choose from, and users can share favorite quotes and notes from their selections on social media.

This app was a bit confusing at first; I certainly wouldn't call the interface intuitive. Despite that, I'd recommend tiReader for the sheer volume and variety of available content; there are over a million free e-books to choose from! To actually find e-books, comics, and audiobooks:

I'll categorize the Kindle app as "free-ish" because you do need an Amazon Prime membership to access over 1,000 free e-books, audiobooks, and e-comics in the Prime Reading category. Membership isn't cheap; $119 a year, or $59 a year for students, but includes free shipping, streaming video content, commercial-free music, and discounts from Amazon affiliates. In case you're wondering, I'm not endorsing Amazon, but I do want readers to know about the massive amount of free content included in their Prime subscriptions. If you find yourself struggling to get your free Kindle e-books on your iPhone or iPad, we'll show you how.

Librovox is not the only source that gives you access to free audiobooks. You could find thousands of audiobooks on archive.org and gutenberg.org that can be downloaded to your iOS or iPadOS device in a very similar way.

Download 800 free eBooks to your Kindle, iPad/iPhone, computer, smart phone or ereader. Collection includes great works of fiction, non-fiction and poetry, including works by Asimov, Jane Austen, Philip K. Dick, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Neil Gaiman, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Shakespeare, Ernest Hemingway, Virginia Woolf & James Joyce. Also please see our collection 1,000 Free Audio Books: Download Great Books for Free, where you can download more great books to your computer or mp3 player.

Open Culture scours the web for the best educational media. We find the free courses and audio books you need, the language lessons & educational videos you want, and plenty of enlightenment in between. 2ff7e9595c
